The Food and Drugs Authority has issued a warning to the effect that some brands of cosmetic products in the market could pose health hazard to users.
In a communique issued by the Authority and signed by the head of communication and public Education Department, Mr James Lartey, the Authority is cautioning the public against patronizing mercury, hydroquinone and some steroids containing cosmetic products.
“the Food and Drugs Authority as part of its routine market surveillance activity, is investigating the possible adulteration of mercury hydroquinone or steroid in some cosmetic products on the Ghanaian market. The FDA’s investigations have revealed that some cosmetic products on the market contain these substances,” the statement has said.
According the FDA, these products if used have the tendency to cause kidney toxicity, birth defects, fertility problems, skin cancer, liver toxicity and permanent neurological damage among others.
The FDA is therefore advising the general public not to purchase any of these products as indicated, to immediately discontinue use and return all such products to the retail shop from where they purchase them or to the FDA and to report to the FDA any adverse effects emanating from the use of these products.
Meanwhile the FDA has given a stern directive for the recall of the affected products from the market.
Lately, the use of steroid and mercury containing cosmetic product is on the rise because users of these products believe the products enhances their look. but the consequences of their use is grievous.
