Protect local companies to save the economy – AGI Vice-chairman

The Ashanti regional vice chairman for the Association of Ghana Industries (AGI);  Mr. Akwasi Nyamekye has expressed grave concern about the lack of satisfactory  government policy direction for local entrepreneurs in the country.

He has observed that our policies on trade and industry are not favoring local entrepreneurs, this he said is underpinning the growth of many industries and companies in the country.

“Building a Friendly Business  environment for local entrepreneurs has  not  been in the interest of the successive  governments  in this country and all our policies are designed to give preference to importers and this is discouraging many from going into mainstream production” he observed.

According to him a business environment that would result in mutually rewarding economic returns for investors has not been considered in most of our trade and industry policies.

This is putting many business owners in an awkward situation and that is worsening the strength of the economy.

He was speaking on Oyerepa breakfast show Wednesday morning.

“The current policy direction for businesses must be revised since all our policies are not in any way helping Ghanaian businesses, and if the situation remains so, most people may shy away from local production.”

“As a nation, we cannot build a resilient economy based on imports, hence the need to revise our policies to suit local content producers.”

“All we hear from the government is that the private sector is an engine of growth, yet, the private sector is woefully supported by the government, its policies are not favoring local private producers” he concluded.
