PNC admits it hasn’t done enough to honor former President Limann’s memory

david-apaseraParty of former President Dr Hilla Limann, the People’s National Convention has admitted it hasn’t done enough to honor his memory.

This comes on the heels of calls by the Limann family for the State to grant him a befitting honor similar to what has been accorded first President Osagyefo Dr Kwame Nkrumah.

Following the 1979 coup led by Jerry Rawlings, Dr Limann, though almost unknown even in Ghana, was elected President on the People’s National Party ticket. He stood for the elections following the disqualification of Alhaji Imoru Egala by the then ruling Supreme Military Council and won 62% of the popular vote in the second round of voting. An economic moderate who supported democratic values and Pan-Africanism, he Limann assumed office as President on the 24th of September 1979 and was deposed in another coup by Mr Rawlings on the 31st December 1981, becoming the only President of the third republic of Ghana.

The PNP metamorphosed into the People’s National Convention party and has since 1992 contested all general elections in the country.

Sharing his frustrations about the inability of the party to honor him, National Treasurer, David Apasera said bearing in mind the enormous contributions of their founder, Mr Limann, the party has failed to honor his memory.

“One would have expected that party to be at the forefront of activities to honour him. Rather unfortanuatly that is not the case. PNC is not doing well for him” he lamented.

Extolling the virtues of Dr Limann, Mr Apasera told Live News’ Ekow Annan that “Limann had a real heart for the growth of the party, he visited every constituency, he visited every home that he needed to visit, every party member no matter where you were, you had a problem that requires for leadership to visit, Limann himself comes there. He mourned with people, that is how the party was doing, but unfortunately after Limann’s demise that has not been the situation.”

Meanwhile the family and the PNC party is lining up a series of activities to commemorate the 34th anniversary of the overthrow of Dr Hilla Limann.
