“I pledge to do all in my power to ensure peaceful election”-Prez Mahama

johnMahamaThe President of the Republic of Ghana, John Dramani Mahama has assured Ghanaians he will ensure the November 7 general election is very peaceful.

Speaking at Asantehene Otumfour Osei Tutu II’s 17th Anniversary of his coronation which coincided with this year’s Akwasidee, the president stated that the security agencies will act professionally to ensure peace during the election period. He added that he will do all in his power to make sure there is peace in the country.

“I pledge to do all in my power to ensure peaceful election which will once again consolidate Ghana’s credentials as the most stable democracy in Africa,” he stated.

He also commended the Asantehene for his contribution towards ensuring peace in the country.

He urged Ghanaians to dedicate themselves to promote peace in the country.

The president also outlined some development projects the government is embarking on in the Ashanti region.
“In developing infrastructure across the country, just like other developmental decisions I continue to make, government will remain even- handed and equitable devoid of politics and partisanship because every Ghanaian matters. (And )I will endeavour to build a sustainable prosperous economy and change the lives of our people. Here in Kumasi, with the support of Nana Asantehene, work is progressing on what will be Africa’s most structured people friendly modern and beautiful market complex at Kejetia. The impact of Nana Osei Tutu in the execution of the project is among others reflected the design and copious infusion of Asante Arts and culture. When completed, the kejetia market will be the largest most modern leading market in West Africa. Contractors on the country’s second military hospital which is been built here in Asanteman, are working within schedule and when completed, Will add to the many other health facilities we are developing to improve quality health care in the Ashanti region, ” the president explained.

According to him, work is ongoing to complete a new 500 bed hospital in the Ashanti region to add up to Tepa and Fomena hospital among other development projects in the region.

Speaking on the significance of Akwasidee, he says the celebration serves as a way of honouring ancestors for the refined culture they have bequeathed to Ghanaians. He says Ghanaians can replicate the warrior principles by ensuring peace in the country. He says Ghanaians will do the nation proud by emulating predecessors who put the Asante Kingdom on the Map as a major trading and commercial centre in the precolonial Times till date.

President Mahama recalled what the Asantehene said during his coronation on April 29, 1999. “Chiefs do not go to war these days and that the wars that they are supposed to help fight and win decisively are the battles against illiteracy, ignorance, poverty and disease”.
He applauded Otumfour for supporting successive governments against ignorance, poverty and disease.
