Parliamentary Chamber: ‘Osei Kyei Mensah Bonsu is not the government’s spokesperson’ – NPP organizer

There have been several cries and outright disapproval by concerned Ghanaians after it was revealed that parliament is considering building a new 450 seat parliamentary chamber.

Many Ghanaians on social media and other platforms are calling for the dismissal of the proposed project because they believe is not a factor to consider in the hierarchy of needs as a developing country and hence described it as a misplaced priority.

However, the Member of Parliament for the Suame Constituency,  Hon. Osei Kyei Mensah Bonsu has been declaring his support for the construction of the new edifice and giving some justifications as to why the new chamber must be built.

According to him, the new chamber will curb the many challenges they face as a house, stating that it will allow the Speaker to easily identify any member who wants to contribute to an ongoing discussion.

The majority leader noted that the current state of the chamber will also be a problem in case of any disaster

The Majority Leader has recently described opposition to the construction of the new chamber for Parliament as baseless.

He said that the country has more pressing issues and priorities to fulfill but all cannot be done before building the new chamber.

Meanwhile the Ashanti Regional Organiser for the New Patriotic party, Mr. Francis Adomako in an interview with Afia Anidaso on Focus FM’s Teknokrat show last Thursday July 4, 2019,  stated that any statement from the majority leader on the issue should not be considered as the position of the government because he is not the spokesperson for the government.

He said construction of the new chamber will not happen,  because the NPP as a party and the Government of Ghana is not in support of the idea and have issued communique to buttress their stance.

“The government’s position is that, they are not in favour of the new chamber, the party is also saying that we don’t support what our colleague members of parliament are saying.” He said.

He reiterated that although having a new chamber is good but with the current situation in Ghana it is not prudent and as such the government and the NPP have come out clear in opposition to the construction of the new chamber.
