Palm trees in medians: Negative comments greet beautification project in Kumasi

Some residents of Kumasi are worried about the planting of palm trees in the median of the road leading from Asafo to Tech.

Information reaching rawgist.com is that the ongoing activity is being done by the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST).

In response to a proposal presented to the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly last year, KNUST received a cheque of GHc 66, 950.00 to beautify and green the metropolis.

The Metropolitan Chief Executive, Hon Osei Assibey Antwi subsequently made an appeal to some corporate bodies to assist in the beautification project.

Some road users who spoke to rawgist.com however fear the planting of palm trees in the medians of the road will not help road safety efforts. Some also believe it will be detrimental to the road itself.

“This will also generate refuse on the road and will have to employ people to work on it therefore it is waste of resources” they said.

Some believe the amount spent on the beautification and greening project could be used to repair the damaged roads which is affecting affecting economic life within the metropolis.

Meanwhile, both the Metropolitan engineer and Town and Country Planning office have denied knowledge on the said beautification project.

Our attempts to reach the Metropolitan Chief Executive of Kumasi to probe further have been unsuccessful.
