On the Campaign Trail With Bawumia: Observations From A Patriot With Journalistic Lens

As the Ashanti Regional Editor for the Ghanaian Observer Newspaper, I had the opportunity to accompany Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the flag-bearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), during his campaign tour in the Ashanti region ahead of the December 7, 2024 elections. With over 16 years of experience in political reporting, I was initially hesitant to join the tour due to the fast pace of the convoys. However, as the sole reporter from my newspaper in the region, I accepted the assignment after a call from Gabriel Amoah, an assistant to the regional communications director. I joined the tour on the fourth day, travelling with representatives from 14 other media houses in a mini van.

My first day on the tour revealed the challenges faced by the media. Colleagues pointed out my lack of provisions, suggesting I bring food for the long days ahead, as they were often served late. They shared that they received daily allowances of GHC 400.00, along with transportation stipends, while I had come unprepared. Conversations in the van highlighted the stark differences in treatment between our group and the press corps from Accra, who were provided regular meals and accommodations. After three days of enduring limited sustenance, I was informed by Paul Yandoh, the Ashanti Regional Communications Director, that my time on the tour was up, despite some media houses being allowed to stay longer.

Despite the logistical challenges, I found great value in following Dr. Bawumia. His articulate vision and innovative ideas resonated with me, and I recognised his potential as a leader. However, I also observed unsettling tactics employed by some members of the campaign team, including orchestrated crowds to create the illusion of widespread support. This strategy faltered in certain areas, revealing a disconnect between the campaign’s perception and the reality on the ground. Additionally, I noted a hesitance among Christian groups regarding a Muslim presidency, indicating a need for Dr. Bawumia to build bridges across faiths. It is crucial for him to reassure voters that his leadership will be inclusive, emphasising competence over tribal or religious affiliations as the campaign progresses.
