Off-Campus Security Challenges: KNUST SRC Allocates GHS 40,000 to deal with the Menace

Dean of students of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), Professor William Gariba has hinted that The Students’ Representative Council (SRC) has allocated an amount of GHS 40,000 to deal with increasing security issues off campus every semester.

Prof. Williams Gariba said this when he addressed members of the KNUST SRC parliament during the second state of the SRC address on Sunday Deceember, 9 2018.

According to him, the amount of money spent on security outside campus has been increased from GHS10,000 to GHS40,000. The Dean of students commended the SRC for the move stating that almost about 75% of students in KNUST reside off campus.

Confirming the allocation, the SRC President, Kelvin Sah said that the off-campus security survey has completed and sooner or later, the security patrol system will begin. He however employed all students to take conscious effort to ensure their safety even as the SRC takes steps to maximize security off campus.

Meanwhile, the Member of Parliament for the Oforikrom Constituency within which KNUST is located, Hon. Dr. Emmanuel Marfo, has reiterated his commitment to increase security of students who reside outside. Addressing the KNUST parliamentary council, he indicated that his office has been providing logistics to facilitate movement of security personnel on patrol.

“It may interest you to know that every month, I provide fuel to the District police command purposely to increase their patrol to the areas where we have students hostels off campus, so that in addition to whatever the University itself is doing, that will be a little contribution from the MP’s angle to make sure that the police are able to move,” he stated.

However,  president of the College of Health Sciences Association who doubles as the head of the SRC parliament budget and finance committee, Michael Odoi indicated on the floor of parliament that the increment of the off- campus security fund from 10K to 40K has not yet been approved by SRC parliament.
