NPP election: Mornah says Kufuor failed to show leadership

Bernard-mornahThe General Secretary of the People’s Convention Party Bernard Mornah has questioned former President John Kufour’s decision to abstain from voting at Sunday’s Super Delegates Conference organised by the New Patriotic Party (NPP).

Speaking on Peace FMs morning show Kokrokoo on Tuesday, Mr. Mornah said the former president did not show leadership with the decision he took.

Spokesperson for the former president Frank Agyekum said he [Kufour] abstained from Sunday’s voting because he wanted to remain neutral.

The move he says is to preserve the former president’s status as an elder in the party.

Mr. Agyekum stated that even though “he is part of the process he will not be voting because he sees himself as a statesman on both national and party affairs” adding that the due to current tensions in the party it will be best he doesn’t show his support for one candidate or the other.

He added that, “the former president has given his express condition that he supports whoever emerges as the winner from the Special Delegates Conference as well as during the National Delegates Conference in October so he wants to put that into practice.”

However, Mr. Mornah said the former president’s decision is wrong and that many people in the party are holding back because they do not know the real stance of the president.

He added that President Kufour’s failure to choose a preferred candidate will mar any future opportunities he may have to question the party if things go wrong with the candidate chosen.

He said the former president is expected to “show leadership not statesmanship.”
