No unopposed! Asokwa youth demand fair contest between Incumbent MP & young Doctor

NPP youth in Asokwa holding a Press conference to call for fair contest in parliamentary election

Some NPP youth within the Asokwa Constituency are asking the National leadership of their party to ensure there is a contest within the constituency. They say they do not want anyone to stand unopposed as they suspect is the agenda of some constituency and regional executives.

They caution that any move to force the incumbent MP down their throat will have negative consequences for the party’s electoral fortunes. “We will resist any effort to push any candidate on us with the last drop of our blood” they said.

Speaking at a press conference Monday morning at Asokwa, an executive of the Asokwa Concerned Youth Association; Collins Ofori popularly known as Nana Wazoa said “We have heard reliably that the NEC is sitting on the issue of Asokwa as far as the vetting is concerned. We are ready to back anyone who wins the primaries in an open contest. We know both aspirants and are calling on the NEC to allow both of them to contest”.

He said many of the members present at the Press conference were delegates and hence significant stakeholders in the party and will not tolerate anything short of what they are requesting.

He also asked for a quick verdict to calm down tensions arising as a result of the long silence after the vetting.

The well attended Press conference saw over 200 youth of the Asokwa constituency clad in black and red attire.

Rebecca Duku Donkor; a leading member of the group also rubbished affirmative action concerns being cited by party executives saying she is a woman and can attest to the non-performance of the incumbent MP that the party is trying to protect. She said females who discharge their responsibility well will naturally not need the kind of protection the party is trying forcefully to give. She insists a fair contest will be the best way to judge whether she has done well for her constituency or not.

Many also threatened to vote against their own party in what has become known in Ghanaian political parlance as “skirt and blouse”.
