NDC Manifesto: Mahama to create of 5 new regions

prez_mahamaPresident John Mahama has hinted five more regions could be created during his second term of office.

However, he said increasing the administrative regions from 10 to 15 will be dependent on a recommendation from a Commission of Enquiry which will be set up.

“We’ll set up a commission of enquiry to look into the creation of new regions,” Mahama said at a public event to outline the 2016 Manifesto of the National Democratic Congress.
He noted: “We currently have 10 regions and we believe that it is possible to increase the number to 15. So we will set up a commission of enquiry that will look into the viability of increasing the number of administrative regions in Ghana from 10 to 15.

“This commission will receive petitions and based on those petitions they will look at whether the creation of those regions is a viable option or not and based on those recommendations, we’ll trigger that processes.”

The main opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP) has also promised to create a new region in the country to be called the Western North region if it is elected.

That decision is based on the current large size of the Western region and the urgent need for an efficient and effective administration and to also harness the abundant resources of the region for effective development in both the Western North and Western South regions, its flagbearer Nana Akufo-Addo said.

“It is time for the creation of a new administrative region for the Western part of Ghana and so we will use all the constitutional process to pursue this ambition,” Nana Addo said.

He, therefore, appealed to the people in the area to vote massively for the party to win both the presidential and parliamentary polls so that it could assume power to discharge that responsibility.
