National Service Coordinator allegedly commits suicide

suicideThe Suhum Municipal Coordinator for the National Service Scheme has allegedly committed suicide outside his home in Somanya.

Lambert Akansah is alleged to be one of 23 district directors of the National Service Scheme under investigation for the disappearance of 7.9 million cedis from the Scheme.

Speaking to JoyNews’ Fred Smith, Akuse District Police Commander, Assistant Superintendent (ASP) Francis Ackah confirmed that Mr Akansah’s body was found hanging on a mango tree near his house on Monday.

According to ASP Ackah, it is not immediately clear what may have prompted the man to hang himself. He revealed that the police are awaiting results from a post mortem which is to be carried out on Monday 5th January, 2015 before conclusions are drawn.

Although police have uncovered rumours that the deceased was troubled, he said, people are unwilling to come forward with information.

This, according to ASP Ackah, was making investigations difficult.

The ASP could not immediately confirm rumours that Mr Akansah was one of 23 National Service District Directors under BNI investigation for alleged 7.9 million cedi fraud but acknowledged that the police were attempting to ascertain the veracity of the rumour.

Scandal rocked the National Service Scheme last year when about 23 directors of the scheme were interrogated by the Bureau of National Investigations (BNI) over the disappearance of 7.9 million cedis from the Scheme.

The Executive Director, Alhaji Alhassan Imoro, was implicated in the alleged cover-up of the fraud. He has also been charged with the theft of a whopping 86.9 million cedis from the scheme for a period covering close to a year.
