National House of Chiefs calls for investigation into Apiatse Explosion

The National House of Chiefs has asked the appropriate agencies to thoroughly investigate the Apiatse explosion and prescribe appropriate punishment for those found culpable.

The House also expressed condolences and sympathies to the bereaved families as well as those injured in the blast.

Fourteen people were killed and more than 170 injured in the explosion, which occurred on Thursday, January 20, 2022, at Apiatse in the Prestea Huni Valley Municipality. Preliminary investigations by the Police had indicated that a truck carrying explosives to the Chirano Gold Mine, about 140km away from Apiatse collided with a tricycle at the Apiatse section of the Bogoso-Kumasi highway. The accident reportedly caused fire, leading to the explosion about 15 minutes later.

A statement released by the house on 25th January, 2022, praised the President and his government for their swift intervention.

“The House also commends the President of the Republic, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo Addo and his government for the swift intervention and arrangement made to fast track the logistics and treatment of our dear brothers and sisters …” the statement said.

The Chiefs called on benevolent individuals and organizations to continue to help affected families in order to make life meaningful for them once again.
