National Council of NPP to decide fate of two flag bearer aspirants next week

npp1The National Council of the New Patriotic Party is expected to decide the fate of two flag bearer aspirants of the party by the close of next week.

The two, Francis Addai Nimoh and John Alan Kwadwo Kyeremanteng have petitioned the leadership of the party to consider re-scheduling the date for the party’s national delegates’ congress slated for October 18th, with the explanation that they need more time to allow them reach out to the over 140,000 delegates who are expected to vote.

The NPP per its election guidelines is expected to organize a final delegates’ congress after pruning down the number of aspirants from seven to five at a recently held super delegate’s congress.

The October 18th polls is in a limbo following a court injunction by two card-bearing members of the party, Rexford Agyei Frimpong and Opong Kyekyeku.

The plaintiffs claim among others that the October 18 date is a violation of the party’s constitution, adding the date favors Nana Akufo-Addo, the lead contender in the race.

However speaking in an exclusive interview with Live News’ Ekow Annan, the National Youth Organizer of the party, Sammi Awuku said the second highest decision making body of the party will next week meet to take a decision on whether to go ahead with the October 18th polls or change it.

“They have petitioned the national council, per our party constitutions, the national council is the mandated body to handle anything that can also vary the date of the election. Once national council decides that we should maintain it we will maintain October, if they decide that we should shift it we will shift it. But that decision will be taken by the close of next week” he said.

Mr Awuku also expressed shock at the petition by the two for a review of the date “it is amazing that it is coming up at this time, because the candidates were well aware of it before they picked their nomination forms, before they came for vetting and before they balloted for their positions, before they went for the August 31st. So changing the rules in the middle of the game if it’s in the wisdom of the national council they will take that decision.”

Meanwhile, the Member of Parliament for Abuakwa South, Samuel Atta Akyea, has urged Alan Kyerematen and Addai Nimoh to back down from their push for a change of date for the National Delegates Conference.

“They might be punished by the delegates for that”, he said.
