MTN Foundation funds surgery, other bills for child with Hydrocephalus

4 year-old Emmanuel Isaac Azuure with the mother after the surgery

MTN Ghana Foundation has saved another life, this time, that of a child suffering from Hydrocephalus.

Hydrocephalus, also called water in the brain, is a condition where there is an abnormal buildup of CSF (cerebrospinal fluid) in the cavities (ventricles) of the brain. The build-up is often caused by an obstruction that prevents proper fluid drainage. This usually results in the enlargement of the head.

MTN Ghana Foundation explain that they received a request for help from the financially constrained mother of Master Emmanuel Isaac Azuure who could not afford the thirteen thousand cedis cost of surgery.

The foundation has consequently paid for the cost of the surgery to save the boy’s life.

Officials of MTN today (Wednesday) visited the family of the boy to check up on his condition. They also made a donation of two thousand Ghana Cedis (GHC2, 000.00) to help cater for his upkeep.

The boy’s mum was full of gratitude to MTN for the rapid support they received towards his surgery and called on other institutions to come to their aid.

“The surgery was done last Friday. I am happy his head is reducing in size a few days after the operation. He is expected to walk after the head shrinks” his mum explained .

The mum is hopeful that 4 year-old Emmanuel Isaac Azuure will walk as the head shrinks to normal. “We are expected to help him through little exercises and show up for regular reviews at the hospital”.

She recounted how the dad gave up on them in the face of the condition “but MTN did not give up on us. We are extremely grateful. We cannot thank them enough. They do not know us from anywhere. All I did was send the boy’s photo. It did not take up to a month for them to respond.”
