MP’s common fund is illegal

Nana Kofi Senya

Former Presiding member of the Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly; Nana Kofi Senya has threatened to challenge the 5 percentum charged on the District Assembly Common Fund meant for Members of Parliament in the country.

He is contemplating going to the supreme court of Ghana to challenge it, since, it is not enshrined in our constitution and the local government Act. The former PM made these observations on Oyerepa 100.7 FM Breakfast show on Wednesday, 23rd December 2020.

“There is no law backing it, and it’s illegal and needs to be challenged” he insisted called on Members of Parliament to concentrate on making laws and leave development issues for the district, municipal and metropolitan assemblies. He intends to plead with the supreme court to compel the MP’s to refund every fund that has been allotted to them back to the Assemblies’ chests.

“This is draining development in the respective areas. Some are misusing the funds and these are facts” he insisted.

The idea of disbursing part of the common fund to Members of Parliament became necessary when the then Minister of Local Government; Mr. Kwamena Ahwoi under the erstwhile Rawlings regime was coerced by the MPs to give them a share of the District Assemblies Common Fund.

Nana Kofi Senya however insists it is wrong, diabolical and a drain on the MMDAs and should be stopped immediately in the interest of national development.
