MOE response to striking polytechnics disappointing – GNUPS

gnupsExecutives of the union of polytechnic students say they are disappointed in government’s handling of issues concerning striking polytechnic lecturers.

It’s been some six weeks now since the polytechnic lecturers boycotted lecture theaters.

Consequently, Polytechnics across the country have been indefinitely closed down. The lecturers are protesting the scrapping of their book and research allowances for a new national research fund.

Fifty executive members of the student representative councils of the ten polytechnics yesterday visited the education ministry for answers.

However, the executives say they were unsatisfied with the response of the minister of education.

They are also unhappy with the resistance of armed police men sent to restrain them from approaching the minister of education.

Public Relations Officer of the Ghana Union of Polytechnic students, Obed Kyei Amponsah told Ultimate Radio; the deputy minister of education, Samuel Okudzeto Ablaquah categorically told them “the ministry wasn’t able to tell them exactly when their lecturers will come to class”.

He said the deputy minister contended that government owed no lecturer any allowances as there was a new facility to replace the lecturers’ book and research allowances.

He told rawgist.com, the lecturers were rather accused of failing to play ball at the negotiating table.
