“Invest in peace building”- mediator tells MMDA’s

soldierChairman of the mediation committee of the Bolgatanga Municipal Assembly  Dominic Akudago has advised Municipal, Metropolitan and District Assemblies to rather invest in peace building than peacekeeping because it is less costly.

Dominic Akudago has been mediating the long standing land dispute in Yoriga between two families, Aboliga and Azaa in the Upper East region.

The two families for the past eight years have been at each other’s throat over a parcel of land in Buligu within the Yorigo Community which has been used for the construction of a school block.

The case has been sent to court on several occasions but no agreement has been reached.

The intervention of the Mediation committee set up by the Bolgatanga Municipal Assembly,  has however managed to broker peace between the families.

However, Mr. Akudago is optimistic that if emergency measures were put in place, the land conflicts witnessed in the region and across the country would have reduced.

“Assemblies should not always wait till a conflict erupts before they spend so much on peacekeepers like soldiers and police. If they got the peace council involved at the beginning of every conflict, it wouldn’t escalate”, he said.

Mr. Akudago wants all MMDA’s across the country to take a cue from the swift intervention the Bolgatanga Assembly has taken.
