ICU ‘anti-Mahama’ demo set for July 9

john-mahaThe Industrial and Commercial Workers Union (ICU) is set to hold a massive demonstration over what it describes as the worsening socio-economic conditions in the country.

According to General Secretary, Solomon Kotei, workers especially in the industrial hub, Tema are losing their livelihoods due to the “economic meltdown”.

“Most of our members have lost their jobs and more will also go due to the economic meltdown; we have lost hope” he stated on Asempa FM’s Ekosii Sen programme Friday.

Mr. Kotie indicated that since the Mahama-led administration has turned a deaf ear and a blind eye to their plight, they will on Thursday July 9; hit the principal streets of Tema to pour out their frustrations.

He said all security arrangement have been made to provide the needed protection of the workers who will embark on the demonstration

The ICU General Secretary cited among other things to falling cedi, increment in fuel and utilities as some of the factors that affect their employers.

Solomon Kotei said ICU will petition President Mahama through the Municipal Chief Executive of Tema to address their concerns.

“Tema is the heartbeat of industries and most of them are folding up due to the economic crisis so we beg the President is to something urgently about it,” he bemoaned.
