Black Stars coach Kwesi Appiah says he would consider Kwadwo Asamoah for the goalkeeping spot if the Juventus midfielder has 
the abilities.
The former Liberty Professionals midfielder earned rave reviews for his sterling performance at a rather unconventional left-back role at the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil. Still, and amid the plaudits, many have questioned Coach Kwesi Appiah’s decision for such a choice, with the opinion that Asamaoh would have strived better in a more advanced role considering the limited effective options at the team’s disposal.
Known for his high work rate and versatility, Asamoah has played at a series of different positions for the Black Stars including left wing, left midfield, central midfield and as a supporting striker. However, Coach Appiah seems to have other plans for the midfielder.
“If he (Asamoah) can play as a goalkeeper and I think that if he plays there, he would be of good help to the team at that particular time, I would put in him in the post,” Appiah said after Wednesday’s training session of the Black Stars ahead of their upcoming 2015 AFCON qualifier against Uganda on Saturday.
“He’s one guy that can adapt to any tactical play the coach puts him and for that reason, I cannot tell you whether I am going to put him at left-back, right midfield or wherever,” he added.
Clearing the air, Appiah says he’s choice of position for the 25-year-old midfielder on any given day depends on several factors either than a stereotypical stance.
“Kwadwo Asamoah is a utility player and can play anywhere you put him. As I’ve said, he’s one player that I can always rely on depending on the opposing team that I’m playing against and then the quality of players I’ve got at that particular time,” he noted.
“Most of the times, you plan your tactical play depending on the quality of players you’ve got at that particular time,” Appiah concluded.
The Juventus enforcer is among 24 Black Stars players currently in camp preparing for Saturday’s game against Uganda at the Baba Yara Stadium in Kumasi.
