GWCL begins water rationing in parts of Ghana

The Ghana Water Company Limited says it has started rationing water in some parts of the country.

Water is currently being rationed in Takoradi, Tema and other parts of the country.

They say the exercise is an annual occurrence and should not be a cause for worry.

Communications Manager at the GWCL; Stanley Martey says the rationing has been scheduled in such a way that people will not feel uncomfortable. He explains that per the rationing plan, water flows at least every two days and hence should not cause much discomfort.

He says just about 40% capacity of water is being treated in the western region mainly due to a reduction in water volumes of the Pra river and other water bodies. He explains however that the situation in Accra and Volta region are relatively better.

He advises that the fight against galamsey be sustained especially in this dry season in order to protect the water bodies and forestall the situation.

He also encouraged commercial users of water to endeavor to conserve water and avoid wasting it.
