Gov’t secures $15m to improve secondary education

naana-janeThe government has secured a $15 million credit from the World Bank to implement the Secondary Education Improvement Project ( SEIP) in underserved high schools.

Under the project, 125 underserved high schools in deprived communities are being supported to build their human resource, including leadership and managerial capacities, after which they would also be assisted to expand and improve their facilities.

The Co-ordinator for SEIP, Ms Dorothy Glover, disclosed this to the Daily Graphic after he opened a two-day training workshop for some school management teams of undeserved schools at Fumesua in the Ashanti Region.

After the workshop, district directors, chairmen of parent teacher associations (PTAs), headmasters and their assistants, accountants and board chairmen of the schools which would benefit from the project, would be made to draw up needs assessment and measures to address them.

The teams will be made to sign partnership agreements with the district authorities and the Ghana Education Service (GES) to ensure adherence to the measures set out to address the challenges.

Ms Glover explained that the objective of the project was to ensure that teaching and learning of Mathematics, Science and Information Communication Technology were enhanced.

Earlier at the workshop, the acting Deputy Director of the Ghana Education Service (GES), Mr Stephen Adu, who took the participants through topics such as Effective Leadership, Communication and Needs Assessment, urged them to perceive every group, including teachers, community members, parents and students as critical partners.

He advised them to constantly exhibit good leadership qualities and involve all the stakeholders in the decision making process towards the attainment of the set goals.
