Ghanaians outraged by new sex education curriculum

Education Minister, Dr Mathew Opoku Prempeh

Ghanaians are outraged at the introduction of Comprehensive Sexuality Education (CSE) for primary school children starting from age four.

Many including well placed personalities in the country have taken to social media to lash out at the new move by the government.

Education officials in Ghana say the CSE introduced into the curriculum will empower children to know about their sexuality and reproductive health issues.

Director of the Ghana Education Service says CSE will help “nurture positive attitudes, open-mindedness, respect for self and others, non-judgmental attitudes and a sense of responsibility concerning sexual and reproductive health issues”.

Many Parents and religious leaders are very uncomfortable with the proposed programme. Parents say it is their responsibility to teach their kids about sex and sexual issues and insist they will not leave that in the hands of politicians. Some have also questioned the need to teach kids such stuff when they are still far from being sexually active.

Many including Kofi Bentil of IMANI Ghana are vehemently opposed to the programme. Some have called it a ploy to prepare the minds of the children to be open to gay, lesbian, bisexual and transgender activism and also indoctrinate them into the practice. Some have also called it demonic.

Various teachers’ associations say there were not consulted prior to the introduction of the programme.
