Ghana swimmers stranded as Ministry fails to provide funds for travel

The fate of the Ghanaian Swimming Contingent who are billed to attend the ongoing World Swimming Competition in the capital of Hungary, Budapest hangs in the balance.

This follows their failure to secure the needed funding for their travel to the games village in the ancient European city.

Efforts by the Swimming Federation to solicit support from the Ministry of Youth and Sports have proved futile.

As at last Wednesday, frantic measures by the team to lobby some corporate entities for support and funding had not yielded any fruitful results.

The Ghanaian Contingent, according to documentation available to GO were supposed to kick start their participation in the games this Thursday, the 20th of July, 2017.

Meanwhile, the games have commenced with the opening day being the 17th of July, 2017 where participating teams and countries were fully represented.

However, as at the time of going to press, the Ghanaian contingent were still stranded in Accra and had received no official communication from the Ministry.

Attempts by this reporter to reach the Minister of Youth and Sports proved futile as Mr Isaac Asiamah’s remained unanswered.

This is despite the calls yours truly had extended to him coupled with a text message that inquired about the efforts the Ministry was making to ensure the Swimming team got the needed support for their travel.

A source close to the team expressed frustration at the turn of events, adding the team had undergone adequate training to participate in the ongoing competition in Budapest.

Lately, the Youth and Sports Ministry have had its share of frustration with the Ghana National Petroleum Company(GNPC) expressing its unwillingness to continue with the sponsorship package it was expending to the National Football team, the Black Stars.

However, in a recent interview on the popular sports highlights show on GTV, Mr Pius Enam Hadzide, Deputy Youth and Sports indicated the efforts by the ministry to engage more with the GNPC to reconsider its decision.

According to him, the GNPC in an earlier discussion mentioned the spread of whatever package it had to all the sporting associations and disciplines in the country when it was ready to do so.
