Ghana Joins Burkina Faso to Honour Thomas Sankara and Fallen Heroes

Ouagadougou, Burkina Faso — Representing the Commander-in-Chief of the Ghana Armed Forces and President of the Republic, H.E. John Dramani Mahama, a high-level Ghanaian delegation visited Burkina Faso yesterday in a show of solidarity with the government and people of Burkina Faso.

The occasion marked the official inauguration of the Thomas Sankara Memorial Park in Ouagadougou, a solemn tribute to Captain Thomas Isidore Noël Sankara and his twelve compatriots who were assassinated on October 15, 1987. The memorial features a giant statue and has been envisioned as a national symbol of reflection and revolution.

In speeches delivered at the event, Burkinabè authorities affirmed that Captain Sankara and his fellow revolutionaries are “fallen but forever alive in their hearts.” The memorial is expected to serve as an enduring source of inspiration for the country’s ongoing efforts to overcome oppression, resist colonial legacies, and defeat terrorism.

In a related gesture of regional unity, Ghana’s late former President Jerry John Rawlings was posthumously honoured during the event. Burkina Faso announced plans to name a ceremonial street in Ouagadougou after President Rawlings, in recognition of his contributions to Pan-African solidarity and revolutionary leadership.

The Ghanaian delegation included:

Minister for the Interior and National Security, Hon. Muntaka Mubarak

Minister for Government Communications, Hon. Felix Kwakye Ofosu

Ghana’s Special Envoy to the Alliance of Sahel States, Lt. Col. Gbevlo Lartey (Rtd)

Chairperson of the Parliamentary Committee on Security and Intelligence, Dr. Zanetor Agyeman-Rawlings

Former National Security Coordinators under President Rawlings, Naval Captain Asaase Gyima (Rtd) and Mr. Kofi Totobi Quakyi

The delegation engaged in productive bilateral discussions on regional security and cooperation during their visit.

Gratitude was extended to the government of Burkina Faso and the Minister for Defence, Brigadier General Celestin Simporé, for the warm hospitality and strong sense of partnership displayed throughout the visit.
