Franklin Cudjoe: The 2015 budget is an insult to Ghanaians

FranklinExecutive Director of IMANI Ghana, Franklin Cudjoe says the 17.5% Special Petroleum Tax announced and approved by Parliament yesterday is an ‘insult’ to Ghanaians.

According to him, the pronouncement is rather driving the economy into the ground rather than improving the living conditions of Ghanaians.

Finance Minister Seth Terkper yesterday presented the budget estimates of Ghana for the 2015 fiscal year with a call on Parliament to approve a 17.5% tax on petroleum products.

Majority members of the House, wielding [the] ‘future is bright’ placards approved the tax after the Minority walked out in protest.

Mr. Terkper’s announcement has angered Ghanaians and the Minority in Parliament who say petroleum prices must be reviewed downward since crude oil prices on the world market has hit a record low.

But Mr. Cudjoe on Adom FM’s Dwaso Nsem Morning Show on Thursday said “It is indeed an insult to Ghanaians to increase petrol because I think it was not done with the feelings of the people in the country in mind.”

“Government should focus on what will bring more revenue to the country rather than bringing the people down. We can only keep hoping against hope” he noted.
