Gov’t itself is guilty of flouting the Disability Act

The Manager of the Edwenase Rehabilitation Centre; Modesto Ayiwole says the country has failed to implement the Disability Act.

MDG : Disabled in Kenya : Society for the Blind, NairobiHe tells rawgist.com in an interview that generally, awareness on disability issues has been improving gradually but living conditions as well as perception of the Physically challenged remain abysmal.

“The Disability Act 715 has so far not been given serious attention. Even the basics which have to do with re-adjusting existing infrastructure is still being ignored”, Mr. Ayiwole explained and added that even government herself is not taking the law seriously.

The Act had been given a ten year moratorium that ends this year but Mr. Modesto Ayiwole reckons nothing positive has been seen as far as implementation of the law is concerned.

“Nothing is happening. Government still builds roads without culverts, we still see open gutters.  A clear example involves the community day schools being built by government. The buildings don’t make any provision for people with disabilities”, he observed, pointing out that government has failed people with disabilities so far.
