Energy crisis: Ghana must go coal – Donkor

Dr Kwabena DonkorThe Chairman of the Mines and Energy Committee of Parliament, Dr Kwabena Donkor, has suggested that Ghana adds coal plants to the country’s energy production mix.

In his view, coal is a cheaper alternative energy source used to produce 40 percent of the world’s power, and therefore Ghana should tap into that potential.

His suggestion follows Nigeria’s cut in gas supply to Ghana as a result of labour agitations in Africa’s most populous country. This is the second time Nigeria has interrupted gas supply to Ghana.

The development means there will be an energy deficit of about 350 Megawatts, a situation that would pose inconveniences to businesses and domestic consumers.

While proposing that Ghana ends her reliance on Nigeria for gas supply, Donkor told STARR NEWS that adding coal to the hydro-thermal energy mix will augur well for the country.
