Build industrialised cities to propel National development-Samatex GM

samartexTimber Merchant and General Manager of Samatex Timber and Plywood Company Limited, Richard Nsenkyire is urging government to consider building and revamping more factories at major towns and cities where there is abundant raw materials to help generate employment and propel national development. He is worried that governments and all Ghanaians paid lip-service to the establishment and maintenance of state-owned industries, a situation that has contributed to the increasing graduate unemployment and abject poverty among some Ghanaians.

Richard Nsenkyire was speaking in a radio interview on the state of Ghana’s timber industry and how to make it competitive on local and international markets.

An industrial city refers to a society driven by the use of technology to enable mass production, supporting a large population with a high capacity for division of labor. Industrial cities also make urbanization desirable, in part so that workers can be closer to centers of production, and the service industry can provide labor to workers and those that benefit financially from them, in exchange for a piece of production profits with which they can buy goods.

Richard Nsenkyire who is also a council member of the Association of Ghana Industries (AGI) says the implementation of the industrialised city proposal will lead to the rise of very large cities and surrounding suburban areas with a high rate of economic activity in the country.

He wants government to support the running of technology-based courses in Ghana’s tertiary institutions to help provide students with the requisite knowhow and continue revamping other state-owned industries in distress to achieve the industrialization of Ghanaian cities. He added Ghana can rub shoulders with other countries like Spain, and the United Kingdom, among others, because it has the competitive advantage in the manufacture of timber products and food processing due to the availability of raw materials and labor. This, he believes would help boost national revenue, increase employment and reduce poverty.

“Ghanaians must be more nationalistic to push for social cohesion and national development instead of indulging in the perennial blame game which does not augur well for our transformation”, he pointed out.

Samatex stands tall as Ghana’s viable timber company with a workforce of 2,200 with the capacity to employ more with the injection of additional capital through government support and a favorable economic environment. Situated at Samereboi in the Wassa Amenfi West District of the western Region, the company also invests in road construction, provision of potable water, health and other social services as part of its social responsibility, towards the welfare of residents within its catchment area.
