Bui Power Plant reduces production capacity less than a year after its inauguration

bui-damLess than a year after the Bui Power Plant was inaugurated to add up to the existing power stock of the country, the Bui Power Authority, has announced a reduction in its current generation capacity.

The commissioning of the Bui Dam in December, 2013 by President Mahama was lauded as efforts by government to tackle the power generation crisis that the country faces.

But the joy that greeted the project appears to be short-lived as water levels in the dam is receding and this has compelled authorities to limit the generation capacity.

A statement released and signed by the Assistant External and Communications Relations Officer, Mawuli Fui Kwadzovia said the reduction was to help protect the turbines from potential damage.

Meanwhile, the African Centre for Enerygy Policy says, a miracle is needed to rescue the Bui Dam from shutting down -the consequence being the worsening of already erratic power supply.

“Bui Dam needs a miracle”, the Head of Programmes at ACEP, Benjamin Boakye told Joy News with an air of finality.

Authorities at the Bui Power Authority have warned, a two meter drop in water levels at Ghana’s third hydro-electric dam will have dire consequences to the already erratic power situation.
