BT Baba to be sworn in as Talensi MP today

BT-BabaNewly elected Member of Parliament (MP) for Talensi in the Upper East Region, Benson Tongo Baba will today be sworn in.

BT Baba shrugged off competition from seven others to win the seat in a by-election which was fiercely contested on July 7.

The Talensi seat became vacant after the incumbent MP, Robert Mosere was enskinned as the Paramount Chief of the area and per the constitution, he had to resign from his political position.

The Speaker of Parliament, Edward Doe Adjaho will swear in BT Baba to represent the people of Talensi in the House.

Meanwhile, the People’s National Convention (PNC) which is challenging the election of BT Baba has given indication they will still pursue the case in court despite his assumption of office as MP.

General Secretary of the party, Bernard Monah, told Citi News, BT Baba’s election was a sham and the court must intervene to determine the true winner of the July 7 by-election.

“As a party, what we do know is that we have an issue with the Electoral Commission that declared results which in our opinion is not the true reflection of what pertained in Talensi so we will take up the Electoral Commission,” he explained.

Mr. Monah argued that whatever the outcome may be in their law suit, the EC would have to comply and BT Baba’s entry into Ghana’s Parliament as MP would have to be suspended.

“If the court calls for a recount or a re-run of the elections, the Electoral Commission would have to comply and I’m sure Parliament would also have to suspend his Parliamentary entry until such a decision is seen through by the courts.”
