BoG blows $350k on Governor’s hotel bills – AFAG

BoGThe Alliance for Accountable Governance (AFAG) has alleged Governor of the Bank has been paying US$350,000 from June 2012 to September 2014, being cost of his hotel accommodation when he assumed the position.

According to AFAG, Mr. Wampah has been paying US$12,500 a month for the use of the facility as his residence.

The former Deputy Governor was promoted to the position following the nomination of the then Governor, Kwesi Amissah-Arthur by President John Mahama as vice president. The latter, then Vice President, became president following the sudden death of Prof. John Evans Atta Mills on July 24, 2014.

The president is said to be occupying the residence designated for the vice president, thereby compelling his vice to also continue to occupy the residence of the Governor. This thus leaves the Governor without an official accommodation, Joy News’ sources have indicated.

Profligacy

A few days ago Ms Lauretta Lamptey, Commissioner of Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ) was alleged to have spent US$148,500 as rent on an apartment at the African Union (AU) Village in which she occupied for 33 months- November 2011 to August 2014.

This generated public uproar and condemnation over the Commissioner’s behavior.

In July 2014, it was disclosed that the NPA paid a monthly rate of US$63,000 as office rent advance for three years, which sums up to an outstanding US$2.3 million.

AFAG asserts that the trend of residing in hotels for long duration by government officials and causing the state financial distress is obnoxious as it puts unnecessary spending on limited state resources.

“AFAG therefore recommends that an investigation is warranted and this must be reported immediately to the appropriate authorities for the right course of action to be taken.

“Government appointees and state officials cannot continue to blow state resources in acquiring personal comfort for themselves while the ordinary tax payers continue to struggle to make ends meet and H.E John Mahama looks on unconcerned. This must stop,” AFAG stated.
