BCI takes over Northern region…screens SHS students in Tamale, other towns

 Ghana Health News-The Breast Care International (BCI) from Monday to Thursday has conducted medical screenings for students in senior secondary schools in Tamale and other towns in the Northern Region.

The gesture forms part of preparation for this year’s national walk for the cure of breast cancer to be held on the 27th day of October, 2018 in Tamale.

The walk which is organized yearly by BCI with support from its sponsors and allied groups will embark on the 8th edition next month with Ashanti having held the first one in 2011.

Speaking to the Ghanaian Observer Newspaper after touring schools in the region, Dr Beatrice Wiafe Addai, President of BCI noted the commitment of her outfit to educate the populace about the threats of breast cancer and also introduce them to the available treatment therapies.

Dr Addai disclosed the special emphasis on students at the second cycle institutions in the country is aimed at sensitizing the younger generation about the disease.

‘’My son as an international non-governmental organization BCI is committed to reaching all women as well as young ladies with the message of breast cancer and its associated threats and for now our prime focus is to get our students at SHS to appreciate things that are happening because of breast cancer and other diseases as well’’, Dr Wiafe Addai noted passionately.

EDUCATION:

Speaking to students at separate functions at the Tamale Secondary School, Tamale Presbyterian Senior High School and the Tamale Business School, Dr Wiafe admonished them to live healthy lifestyles.

The cancer surgeon urged the female students to wash their underwear especially brassieres regularly.

She noted the breast cancer disease has no specific cause but said risk factors such as family history of the disease is suspected to be one cause.

Dr Wiafe advised students against smoking and alcohol intake since that can lead to many health related ailments.

‘’As students whether you are male or female avoid the consumption of alcohol as you also desist from smoking since all of these has dire health implications’’, the famous cancer surgeon admonished.

APPRECIATION:

Showing appreciation for the education, students at all the visited schools thanked Dr Wiafe Addai for the gesture.

Many disclosed that they had no idea about the breast cancer disease while others who had heard about it said they only saw pictures on television.

One of the students obviously overwhelmed by the immense education given to them wrote a poem in honor of Dr Wiafe Addai.

Describing the cancer surgeon as a light that shines throughout the world, she urged Dr Addai to continue her efforts of caring for the needy.
