Bad road kills pupils, stifles economic activity at Nyong

Imagine a situation where children cannot go to school for days when it rains simply because anytime they try to ply the dangerously bad road that leads to their school during the raining season, a child drowns.

This is the situation the over 900 residents of  Nyong Yapalsi in the Karaga district of the northern region face each day of the rainy season.

The people say they are now afraid to leave their rooms during the rains out of fear. They are even more worried that their several pleas for their roads to be fixed have consistently been ignored.

They say no cars or motorbikes ply the roads and now even humans on foot are unable to ply the highly eroded road when it rains. “The road has been chopped off by erosion”, they tell rawgist.com.

Already, two pupils are reported to have drowned in an attempt to use the road during the rains.

Assemblyman for the area; Alhassan Mohammed explains that the bad nature of the road is affecting all forms of economic activities in the area including farming; the main stay of the residents.

He says several letters sent to the Ghana Highway Authority, the District Chief Executive and chiefs have all not yielded any positive response.

They cried to the government to take a look at their plight and come to their rescue immediately as any further delays will only result in further loss of lives.
