The Ahafo regional police command led by the commander, DCOP Peprah Boadu has arrested 62 illegal miners at Kenyasi in the Asutifi north district of the Ahafo region of Ghana for encroaching on Newmont consession.
Confirming the incident to rawgist.com, the Ahafo regional police commander, DCOP Peprah Boadu said his outfit has been receiving series of complaints from Newmont Gold corp that illegal miners are using their consession.
According to DCOP Peprah Boadu, he personally visited the site with officials of Newmont Gold corp to survey the place and saw about 500 people mining illegally there.
” I came back to the site with my men at 5:30 a.m the next day .Many of them who saw the police vehicles took to their heels and left the 62 who were busily working underground. We got them arrested together with their equipment and many sacks full of stones and sand” he explained.
” I am not hesitating at all. They will be put before court on Monday’ – DCOP Peprah hinted.
