2019 Mini GUSA Games Open With KNUST Missing Out, Abel Manomey Scoring Four With Mukurama Carrying The Day For UDS

The 8th edition of the Biennial Ghana University Sports Association (GUSA) competition began today, January 3, 2019 at the Cape Coast stadium after a colorful opening ceremony with interesting fixtures.

Eight public Universities; University of Health and Allied Sciences (UHAS),University of Professional Studies Accra (UPSA), University of Education Winneba (UEW), University of Ghana (UG), University of Cape Coast (UCC), University of Mines and Technology (UMAT), University Energy and Natural Resources (UENR) and University for Development Studies  (UDS) excluding the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) have pitched camps on the campus of UCC for the 2019 edition of the competition.

KNUST, which was initially declared the host institution, withdrew from hosting the tournament following the impasse in the School that led to authorities revising the academic calendar, thus the period (2nd-11th January) clashing with exams period of the school.

UCC stepped in to host the tournament after deliberations between management of the school and GUSA.

After first day fixtures for the over a week long event, UCC in men soccer drew 1-1 with UPSA for the opening match whilst Abel Manomey, a former Olympics player stared for UEW with Four goals after UEW defeated UHAS by 6-1.

Northern Ladies striker and captain for the Black Maidens of Ghana ,Abdulai Mukurama carried the day for UDS after her lone goal was enough to defeat defending champions UCC.

During the opening ceremony, Vice Chancellor of UCC Professor Joseph Ghartey Ampiah highlighted the important role sports plays in modern education.

‘So it was important UCC stepped in to host after the short notice,’ He said.

He further advised the sports men and women to desist from acts of violence to register their displeasure as experienced by some schools in the country

President of GUSA, Dr.Charles Domfeh, used the platform to appeal to government to provide sporting facilities in academic institutions in order to develop sports in the country and to put in place measures to avoid adhoc preparation to tournament in the country.

He added that GUSA will be represented at the Fédération Internationale du Sport Universitaire (FISU) games in Italy, Torino and pleaded with stakeholders to help and make this dream a reality.
