ECG not being privatized-President

ECGPresident Mahama has laid to rest rumours and agitations regarding a plan to privatize the Electricity Company of Ghana.

Speaking to the Press Tuesday at the flagstaff House, the President said unequivocally that the electricity company of Ghana is not going to be privatized. He explains that it is being restructured to ensure efficiency at the downstream level.

Five members of the Convention People’s Party (CPP) sought to challenge in court the moves by government to partially privatize the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG).

In an application filed at the Human Rights Court, the petitioners prayed the court to direct government to “cease forthwith from undertaking or continuing any process of any kind whatsoever to privatise the Electricity Company of Ghana”.

The President said already, more than 1 million dollars has been invested in the company as part of efforts to improve the efficiency of the company.

The President said the restructuring will ensure the electricity company owned all infrastructure and equipment. He explains that private entities will be brought in to help the company rake in more revenue and improve its operations. The President believes the restructuring will open up the company to employ more people.
